An immersive installation by Arthur Henderson, The Hermit’s Entourage presents a faction of unruly objects that elicits the familiar while prodding the psyche. Rife with unabashed irreverence and visceral materiality, Henderson’s forms lead us outside of our mass-produced surroundings and into The Hermit’s pungent world.
Facing this collection of obscure totems, our awareness attunes to the possibility of a fictional realm. Suddenly, identifiable figures become conspicuous symbols, vessels with quasi-sexual and foreboding implications. Splayed out before the viewer is an environment on the threshold of the physical and spiritual. As one confronts this precarious space, Henderson compels the to the edge of magic; to reckon with the dissonance between fact and fable.
